Prayer Network
The Prayer Network consists of a group of parishioners who undertake to pray over a period of time for particular needs.
In the Lady Chapel you will find slips of paper for you to write an intention, and a box to put it in. There is no need to give a name, unless you wish to do so. On Sundays the box is checked and intentions distributed among those who have undertaken to render this service.
It would be appreciated if any answers to prayer were acknowledged as this provides encouragement to the Prayer Network. Through our prayers we can all support each other especially when times are difficult.

Choir
Anyone interested in joining the choir please contact Theresa on Tel: 881170
Choir practice: 7.00 p.m. Tuesday.
Please make every effort to attend

Please remember in your prayers:
Please remember in your prayers: Norman Fish, Pamela Pernyes, Joe Greene, Joyce Ward, Thomas Jugg, Harold Storr, Edward Ford, John Flanagan, Vera and Gus Lord, Mary Brennan, Lisa Maria Freeman, and all in our parish who are ill.

Sick and in hospital
The Data Protection Act was a well-meaning piece of legislation intended to preserve us all from the effects of false information or intrusive use of data held on all electronically. However it is sometimes used in hospitals and hospices (where staff are anxious about being sued for any mistakes) to prevent priests from getting access with Catholic patients. Although discussions are taking place between the Church and NHS to try to improve the situation the ONLY way, at present, of ensuring that a sick or dying patient receives the sacraments is TO NOTIFY THE PARISH PRIEST. Tragically, in many cases, the first person to contact the priest is the Undertaker! Don't let this happen to your loved ones - give us a call.
The Strange Case of the Missing Parishioners
Sherlock Holmes’ elder brother, Mycroft, worked for the government in a very ‘hush-hush’ capacity.
All that Holmes would tell his old friend Watson about his brother’s work was
“Omniscience is his specialism”. Alas, your parish priest does not have the same power of knowing everything without needing to be told.
On three occasions during the last few weeks, I have discovered that faithful parishioners had been admitted to hospital, using sleuthing techniques that the younger Holmes would have advised.
If you know that a parishioner has been admitted to hospital, please tell us - don’t assume we already know

Marriage
Couples planning to marry at Our Lady of Lincoln Church need to give Fr Paul at least 6 months notice so that Marriage Preparation can be arranged.

NDCYS World Day 2008
Details may be obtained at http://wyd2008.org/ or e-mail: una@briars-youth-centre.freeserve.co.uk

“The Parish of Our Lady of Lincoln”
This is a beautiful and interesting booklet on the life and history of our parish. Richly illustrated in colour it contains a detailed guide to the church.
Every family in the parish should have one. Parents please use it to help your children to become familiar with our church and to understand the spiritual significance of the symbols and furnishings

A contribution of £2 towards the cost of printing would be appreciated

Catholics and Divorce
We have a supply of booklets entitled "Catholics and Divorce" - finding help and healing within the church. It gives a sensitive and practical guide to this important issue. If you would like a copy please see Fr Paul

Catholics and Communion in non-catholic churches
What Catholics believe about the Eucharist:-
it was given to the Church by Jesus at the Last Supper.
Jesus told his Apostles, “Do this in memory of me”. He intended the Church to continue to celebrate the Eucharist after his Ascension.
He said ‘This is my Body,’ ‘This is my Blood,’ the basis of the Church’s teaching that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist.
Because Jesus’ instruction to celebrate the Eucharist was given to the Apostles, the only people who can validly celebrate it are those whom the Apostles ordained as bishops and priests and their successors in the Catholic Church who remain in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.
Other Christian Churches:-
Most Christian churches celebrate Holy Communion.
Few people in the other Christian churches believe everything that the Catholic church teaches about the Eucharist (particularly the ‘Real Presence’ and the ‘Apostolic Succession’)
In some Christian churches, ministers hold a wide range of views about what the Eucharist is:
Many other Christian churches extend ‘Eucharistic Hospitality’ to members of other churches i.e. they invite everyone to receive Holy Communion at their services.
So why doesn’t the Catholic church accept the generous invitation by other Christians to join in their celebrations?
There is no problem for Catholics in attending services, prayer groups, baptisms, weddings etc in other churches. However Catholics do not receive Holy Communion in churches which are not in communion with Rome.
This is because St Paul taught us: “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of one bread.” In other words, receiving the body of Christ in Holy Communion is an act of unity amongst those who share a common belief in what the Eucharist actually is.
For a Catholic to receive Holy Communion in a church which does not share our belief might suggest to other people that fundamental differences in what we believe, are unimportant. The Church has always taught that the celebration of the Eucharist is the most important thing that we do. It would be false ecumenism to accept something which is not in accordance with our beliefs.

Counselling is also always available from marriage care.

Mass readings in other languages
Useful Website:
You may find it useful to make a note of the following website address: www.virc.at.
From this website you can obtain Mass readings in various languages. This may prove helpful in responding to the pastoral needs of the many migrant workers now resident in the diocese.

Transport to Mass
Transport to Mass from Dunholme and Welton.
We now run a minibus service from Welton and Dunholme to the 6.30 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass at a cost of £1 return.
If you are interested please let Fr Paul know. Welton & Dunholme have been chosen because they are the most distant parts of our parish with reasonable populations. The minibus could pick up ‘en route’.

Promoting Spirituality
Promoting Spirituality in our Diocese.
“Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my steps and a light for my path.”

The Diocesan Pastoral plan identified two areas relating to “Spirituality” which permeates and underpins all that we do

Two suggested New Year resolutions were to:
1. Set aside fifteen minutes of each day for private prayer.
2. Read a chapter of the Bible daily.
To help with prayer and bible reading Sister Stephanie intends holding weekly sessions of Lectio Divina (or Sacred Reading) for those who are interested. This is an ancient method of praying based on a prayerful reading of the Scriptures. Pope Benedict encourages us to take up this form of prayer. He says:-
“This prayerful reading of Scripture is a process which allows God’s Word to transform our ways of thinking and acting. It is simple, practical and powerful.”
Our sessions started on 14th January and continue in the parish lounge on Monday evenings, from 7.30 p.m. till 8.45 p.m.

Adoration for young people
If you are 13 years+ why not join other young people in prayer, singing and Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. We meet on Wednesday evenings at the Mount and we would love to see you there. For more details ring Emily on 01427 667125.

Baptism Preparation
Baptism Preparation: Parents of children who have not been baptised should contact Sister Stephanie to arrange a pre-baptism course.

Holy Communion to the Sick
Holy Communion to the Sick
Since its earliest times the Church has always set great importance on taking out the Eucharist from the celebration of Mass to those members of the community unable to be present by reason of ill health.
It is particularly important that the sick should receive sacramental grace in this way, and it is also a powerful sign that they remain an important part of the worshipping community, the body of Christ the Church.
If you know of anyone who is unable to get to Mass because of ill health, please let us know so that we can offer them the opportunity of Holy Communion at home through our network of Extraordinary Ministers

Children’s Liturgy
Children's Literature will recommence on Sunday 31st August

Wednesday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Exposition will recommence in September.

Could you not watch one hour with me?
So few come to be with our Lord to recall the great mystery of faith. We need God in our lives more now than ever before. What if our faith was being persecuted and we could no longer visit the Blessed Sacrament freely? How we would long then to sit for a while in front of our Lord and experience His healing power. But we have the freedom to be in his presence. Let us not delay to visit our Lord God who is exposed within the Blessed Sacrament here in our church every Wednesday from 10.15 am until noon followed by Benediction. “Come to me all you who are heavily burdened, and I will refresh you and give you peace.”.

RCIA

Our R.C.I.A. ‘Journey in Faith’ which started last September officially ended on Trinity Sunday. We are now looking ahead to the early Autumn when a new programme will begin. This is for Enquirers or for those who have already decided to become Catholics. Also, adult Catholics who have not received the sacraments, ‘Returners’ who would like to renew their practice of the faith, or anyone who would just like to up-date their knowledge - all are welcome.
It would be very helpful if anyone interested would speak to Sister Stephanie so that adequate preparation can be made in advance.

A journey in Faith
R.C.I.A - A Journey in Faith
As we prepare and pray for a new course to begin in September we thank
Lt Cdr Dave Sargent for sharing his personal story with us. He writes:
Having been a lifelong practising member of the Church of England making the step of being received into the Catholic Church was not as huge a step for me as it might have been for many people. Indeed, I prefer to think of my reception into the Church as a return to Catholicism rather than a change of religion, at least a return to Catholicism for a “Sargent”, after a break of around 500 years, or potentially less as my maternal grandmother was from a Scots-Irish family.
I do concede that had it not been for Maria I may never have considered this move. Her reception into the Catholic Church in 2007 after years of talking about it (including 2 years as vice-chairperson of the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy at University) was my spur into action. My thoughts started with supporting her and extended to giving stability to my two boys - no further. However, as I started to read, study and speak to people about the Catholic Church I felt my mind opening to issues I had never considered. I was challenged in my core beliefs and interpretations, both in questions of faith, history and morality. I took a long hard look at myself and I took a long hard look at the church I have been an active member of for my whole life. It was at ‘this moment of disclosure’ that I realised that the only path I wanted to follow was to be received; ultimately a sense of duty to my family was utterly overtaken by a wish to follow what I believe to be the only true path.

Humanae Vitae
Humanae Vitae: Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on human life and reproduction issued in 1968 remains the most controversial teaching document of the Church in recent times. But how many people have actually read it?
We have a small number of copies, with a commentary by Father George Woodall of our own diocese, available on the newsstand, price £3. Please put money in C.T.S. box

Fr. David Everitt writes:
Dear Father Paul, I was absolutely thrilled, and somewhat stunned, when I saw the size of the cheque. What an incredible amount from lovely, generous people. I can’t say how grateful I am on behalf of ‘the little ones’. Since then I have received two substantial cheques making the (very) grand total of £1,855.68!!
Sandra (please thank her again) made me very welcome as did all your lovely folk. The church is stunning. Lovely meal at the Convent. Renewed, deeply grateful thanks.

Catholic Children's Society
Advance Notice. Catholic Children’s Society.
Meeting with the Chief Executive, Steve Hargrave, on Monday 29 September at 7 p.m. at St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Gainsborough.
Following the announcement that our Children’s Society is to amalgamate with the Anglican society, forming a new organisation independent of both dioceses, there have been a number of questions asked and concerns raised regarding the future of child care work in our diocese. You are invited to come to ask Steve about the new arrangements and what they will mean to the diocese and parishes.

Reflection
Reflection on the Second Reading of today’s Mass as we continue the “Year of Paul”.
The letter to the Romans is Paul’s major epistle. It contains the fruits of his mature reflection on the mystery of Christ.
In today’s second reading Paul identifies himself as “Apostle to the Gentiles” but to warn them against smugness he reminds them that their own good fortune has come about because of the refusal of the majority of his fellow Jews to accept the Gospel.

Just as it was Israel’s destiny to be a light to the nations, Paul now intends to reverse the roles so that Gentile converts to Christianity will be an inspiration to God’s chosen people, Israel, to accept the Gospel.
Paul depicts God as a patient, tolerant God, who is prepared to show mercy to those who are disobedient, and to draw in others who have seen this display of mercy.
